Help keep production local
By: Caitlin Lassen
On set production work is typically adored by all, but with the recent shift of prolonged filming jobs outside California, production workers are speaking up. Michael Kehoe, a studio city resident, spent 5 months filming in Louisiana while his family stayed home. His kids were loosing it, he explained. Upon return, his baby didn’t recognize him.
Ed Gutentag, a longtime friend of Kehoe’s, helped establish shootmoviesincalifornia.com in order to support the mission of keeping television production in California. Their facebook group has nearly 6,000 fans. But they haven’t stopped there. They’ve also lobbied a bill that would require state-funded commercials to be shot and produced entirely in California. It’s called AB 1778, or the “Happy Cow Bill.”
According to the Milken institute, our state has lost 10,600 entertainment industry jobs, 25,000 related jobs and 2.4 billion in wages since 1997 due to production moving out of state. But Kehoe commented, “it’s not the studios fault, it’s the producers fault.”
